Before beginning therapy, I conduct a comprehensive evaluation. This is important because not every individual is certain they want to remain in the relationship.
The purpose of the evaluation is to understand each partner’s perspective, level of commitment, and goals for therapy, as well as the strengths, challenges, and patterns within the relationship.
The evaluation includes individual sessions with each partner and joint sessions. During this process, I assess communication patterns, conflict dynamics, emotional and physical safety, attachment styles, and individual factors. I also explore whether both partners are willing and able to engage in couples work in a way that is productive and respectful.
The evaluation concludes with feedback and recommendations. These may include proceeding with couples therapy or referring one or both parties for individual therapy (either instead of or in addition to couples work). Another possible recommendation is exploring discernment-focused therapy when partners are uncertain about the future of the relationship. This structured evaluation helps ensure that the therapeutic strategy aligns with each person’s needs and supports the healthiest possible outcome, whether that involves strengthening the relationship or gaining clarity about next steps.
